Session 7 Activity: Mobile learning

Mobile Learning

Students of today are very comfortable with technology; computer games, iphones and iPods to them is more of an accessory than a necessity, extension of themselves. With the availability of applications, a mobile becomes a multifunction device-useful tool. In reality, I have not seen many teenagers wearing a watch – it is a single function device! Having portable technology at your fingertips, certainly would transform the way teachers teach and students learn. Students now are able to carry a whole library of reference material in their pockets with them anywhere, applications help organise student’s life and become useful study tools anywhere anytime.

Mobile learning in schools opens up a whole range of educational opportunities for the students. Teachers of course, can implement different teaching and learning styles to accommodate their students. There are some concerns however regarding mobile learning, such issues as, devices being disruptive in class, small screens. Overall, I think that mobile learning boosts the efficiency and effectiveness of learning, it allows for more comprehensive learning experiences. As funny as it sounds, I guess mobile learning allows learners make use of their idle time to stimulate the mind and in doing so become more productive.

Which learning styles this ICT support?

This ICT supports the constructivism learning style; mobile learning is a way of communicating that creates knowledge and very much based on constructivist approach.

How could this ICT be implemented as a good cognitive tool within the learning environment?

This ICT gives the viewer information to form opinions, get curious and construct their own opinions on the subject.

How is this ICT enabling the development of creativity?

I think this ICT would appeal to the wide range of audience, it has various forms of media, I think it is creative.

  1. As the common use of iPhone, iPad and iPod touch today, using mobile devices to support innovative education seems not strange any more. I always like to go to apple app store to find many interesting application, which will provide diverse subject resource out of the class. You do not need to bring heavy book anywhere anymore. Thousands of apps, endless potential means children can master knowledge in a more convenient way.

Further more, the devices like podcasts, extend your classroom out of school.Podcasts give students more freedom to learn — wherever and whenever they want. Students can play podcasts on any computer, iPod, iPad, or iPhone. So when they’re in class, they can spend more time participating in meaningful discussions and working on team projects.

The iCloud we discussed in session 6 is also a good tool for educational resources to share and communicate. I suggest, such advanced technology should not be entertainment only, but to improve more aspects such as education, economy and etc.

  2. Today, many people have iphone or ipad or itouch or other apple device, but how many people actually make full use of such device. I think in most area of China, people buy iphone just for fashion. The device in their hand just has few function, like telephone, send sms, take photo, etc. They even do not know what is itunes and how to use it.

I always think this question, why a lot of people buy iphone? Taking my experience as an example, I have no iphone, I just have a itouch, I use it for some daily study, such as check email, reading book, write notes and many other practical function. I prefer the app called "evernote", it makes me easy to take note when every I want.

I just think, people should not regard Iphone as a smart phone, if you use iphone well, it well be a powerful weapon.
